Canals & lakes
The Dortmund-Ems Canal flows right through Riesenbeck – on foot you’re at the water in a few minutes. Then there’s the Nasses Dreieck and two swimming lakes in Hörstel.
Dortmund-Ems Canal & Nasses Dreieck
The Dortmund-Ems Canal, opened in 1899, is one of Germany’s most important waterways. At the Nasses Dreieck it meets the Mittelland Canal. On the well-made towpaths you walk and cycle on the flat right by the water – watching the ships go by.
Torfmoorsee
The lake, around 24 hectares in size, was created as a gravel pit when the A30 motorway was built. Today it is an official bathing spot of the town of Hörstel with a sandy beach, sunbathing lawn and gently sloping entry. A circular path leads around the lake; on the shore you’ll see water birds and dragonflies.
